Frequently asked questions

Which chisel and collet sets fit the Model M?

Three sets are listed for the Model M and early MCD machines: 8, 10 and 12 mm (MULMSETM); ¼″, ⅜″ and ½″ (MULMSETIMPERIAL1); and ⅝″ and ¾″ (MULMSETIMPERIAL2). Each set comes with the collets that hold its augers; the ⅝″ and ¾″ set has one collet for both.
What gap should I leave between the bit and the chisel?

About 0.8 mm (1/32″) for chisels up to ¾″, and about 1.6 mm (1/16″) for larger ones. Set it with a coin as a spacer.
How do I sharpen a mortise chisel?

Turn a sharpening cone inside the chisel, against the inside bevels, then rub the outside faces flat on a stone. Touch up the spurs of the auger bit with a file. Our MCL cone sharpener is listed for chisels from 3 to 25 mm (⅛″ to 1″).
